Twenty-three airlines (12 domestic, 11 foreign flag) fly out of Houston, providing daily nonstop and direct service to 113 domestic and 38 international destinations, including the major cities of Europe and Central America. Houston Intercontinental Airport (IAH), north of Houston Central Business District (CBD), garners 70% of the system's total traffic while Hobby Airport (HOU), south of the CBD, accounts for 30%. Ellington Field (EFD), south of Hobby, is both a commercial airport and a center for aerospace development.

The Houston Airport System's location in the south central United States places it equidistant from the East and West Coasts, allowing easy access to the nation's business centers. Houston Intercontinental Airport's frequent air service and numerous direct and connecting flights place the world's major cities within a day's plane ride of Houston.

Houston Intercontinental Airport is the base of operations for 20 passenger airlines. The airport is 22 miles (30-45 minutes by car) north of the Central Business District. Business travelers can reach the airport by any of several routes: Interstate 45 which passes IAH six miles to the west, U.S. 59 which passes four miles to the east, the Hardy Toll which approaches the airport directly from the south, and the Sam Houston Tollway which loops in from the West. There is adequate parking at IAH and seldom any congestion.

Air freighter and "combi" service are available from Intercontinental to Europe, Asia and Latin America on a regular basis. Typical commodities air freighted through Houston include computers, computer equipment, construction equipment, electrical motors, livestock, machine parts, medical supplies, oil field equipment, printed matter, and produce.

Coach USA offers an "Airport Express" shuttle service between the two
airports every 30 minutes. The estimated travel time is 70 minutes
and the cost is $17.00 per person. The shuttles pick-up passengers
from the lower level, outside the baggage claim area. For more information

Seven passenger airlines operate out of William P. Hobby Airport. Hobby is located seven miles (15-20 minutes by car) southeast of Houston's CBD. Travelers can reach Hobby via Interstate 45 on the east and State Highway 35 on the west.

Ellington

Ellington Field is 17 miles (20-30 minutes) south of the Central Business District. The Department of Defense transferred ownership of Ellington Field to the City of Houston on July 1, 1984. Before that, Ellington had served as a training base for pilots, bombardiers and maintenance crews during both World Wars and the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. Current airport users include the Texas Air National Guard, NASA, the U.S. Coast Guard, a U.S. Army Helicopter Battalion, Grumman Aerospace, Refractory Services, and Southwest Services. UPS has made Ellington its penetration point for service into Mexico.
Continental Express provides shuttle service to IAH. Access to Ellington Field is from Highway 3 which links up with Interstate 45 to the west.
